“She and I are…I don’t know what. We’re still figuring it out.” That was the most honest answer he could come up with.

A muscle in Conroy’s jaw shifted.

The man was younger than Tate by a few years at least, but he was Savannah’s boss. And even though he was younger than Savannah as well, he acted more like an older brother. Go figure. Conroy acted like that with Cassie who was his actual sister. It was good that Savannah had someone in her life who cared about her like that, since she had no family nearby. Did she have family anywhere?

When he boiled it down, Tate and Conroy both cared about her.

Conroy said, “Let’s go take a look.”

He followed the chief of police inside, noting the smell before anything else. Then the sound of crying. Not the kind Elexa had done in his arms last night. No, this sounded like a ten-year-old girl denied a trip to the mall.

A slender man in a suit and shiny shoes, his hair gelled but now mussed, lifted his hands. “I don’t know. I told you that.”

Sergeant Basuto stood with him, pencil in one hand and notepad in the other. “Sir—”

“No.” The slender man waved. “This is…it’s just too much to—” He gaped. “What is he doing here?”

“Fenris.” Conroy stopped. “What’s the problem?”

Tate hung back.

“He…”

Fear washed over the man’s face. With a name like Fenris—first or last, Tate didn’t know—he wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. But the guy seemed to be scared…of him. “Dude. I don’t know you. Whatever you’ve heard about me, it isn’t true.”

So many rumors about Tate were flying around town. Maybe he’d heard Tate was suspected of Aggerton’s murder.

Basuto ushered him away.

Conroy said, “What was that?”

“How am I supposed to know?”

“Is the same thing going to happen at every turn during this investigation?”

“I hope not.” Tate sighed. “I did nothing to that guy, and I can’t control hearsay or people’s opinions.”

A muscle in Conroy’s jaw flexed. Tate followed him to the study where the smell originated. The police department’s computer technician, Dean’s younger brother Ted, sat at the desk, working on the computer.

“Over here.” Conroy waved Tate to the far wall, mostly made up of windows that showed a view of the DA’s expansive property. In this part of town, the lots were four to six acres. Tate had no interest in mowing that much lawn.

As he neared the windows he saw Savannah, crouched and bent over a man’s torso. Blood had pooled around the body. The DA had been stabbed multiple times. Thinking about it like that, all clinical as a statement of facts, helped. The smell did not.

She stood and turned. The bruising on her face had been covered with a shimmery layer of makeup that lightened her cheeks but didn’t totally disguise the purple color. Or how tired she looked. “The doc is on his way to take a look.”

“Copy that. I’ll leave you to it.” Conroy left.

Savannah’s top lip, under her nose, glistened. She noted his gaze and said, “Peppermint, for the smell.
